Amrit Kumar Bakhshy, President

After doing Masters in English Literature from the Lucknow University in 1963, Amrit acquired professional qualifications, with an International Course in Labour Laws in 1969 from the Indian Institute of Labour Studies, New Delhi and post-graduate course in Personnel Management in 1982 from the Tata Institute of Social Sciences Mumbai. He is also a Certified Associate of the Indian Institute of Bankers. Amrit started his career in 1963 as a lecturer in English in a Post Graduate College in UP, had a brief stint in Hindustan Times Ltd. New Delhi and thereafter joined State Bank of India in 1966 as a Probationary Officer. Moving to the Indian Banks Association in 1985 he worked as Personnel Adviser and Chief Executive Officer for many years. Joining an export house in 1996 as its Managing Director was his last professional responsibility before he decided to retire in 2007 and settle in Pune.. Having moved to Pune to look after his daughter as a full time care giver, he and his wife, Ranjana, volunteer for SAA. In him SAA found a resourceful and helpful volunteer who contributed in discussions and debates related to Disability Laws, particularly the Mental Health Act. As SAA’s President since 2010, Amrit is involved full time in SAA’s day to day working and in various aspects of the organisation's administration. Amrit is a member of the Institutional Board of the National Institute of Mental Health and Neuro Sciences and a collaborator of the Grand Challenges' Quality Rights Project in Gujarat. He is also on the Institutional Review Board of ILS Law College Pune.

Abhay Kele, Vice President

He is a Civil Engineer, working in infrastructure, real estate development under the banner of Prithvi Edifice. He has received Times Icon Award for 2016: Top Emerging Builder of Pune. He has developed a copyrighted concept of 1 BHK Duplex and has put up the theory of "Cubic Feet Living" before Real Estate Industry. He is also in the Business of Hospitality. Despite his hectic professional engagements, he finds time for Social Causes.

Anil Vartak, Vice President

Anil Vartak is a PhD holder from Gokhale Institute of Politics and Economics Pune, on “Demand and supply gap in Mental Health”, and works as the Head of the Department of Economics in S.P. College, Pune. Anil started “Ekalavya” a self-help support group in 1998 and did pioneering work in rehabilitation of persons suffering from mental disorders and increasing awareness amongst the caregivers.

Anil has served as a member of a Working Group appointed by Government of Maharashtra regarding Inclusion of Mental Illness as a disability in the “Persons with Disability Act”. He was also an Advisor to “Bapu Trust”, Pune. He has written a booklet “Let us try and see” based on his personal self-help strategies. Anil was on Rugan Hakka Samiti of Yerwada Mental Hospital, Pune.

In 2005 Anil received “Sangharsh Sanman” award from Muktangan Foundation of Awachat family. Recently Anil has been appointed on the advisiory board of Movement for Global Mental Health (MGMH) for a period of three years 2017-2020.

Neelima Bapat, Secretary

Neelima holds Masters degree in English and has also undergone Teachers Training for Handicapped Children. She worked in Corporate Offices and as a teacher in various schools and colleges including at Kamayani School for Mentally Handicapped. Neelima joined SAA in 1998 as a volunteer and has held various positions of responsibility. She has been working as a facilitator for Care Giver’s Group and Patient’s Group. She also actively participates in various activities of SAA. She has attended various seminars and conferences including a conference arranged by WFSAD, International Leaders Training Program and Annual Meet at Chicago, USA organised by Recovery Inc. Neelima is author of two books, one of which, Ata Ujadel, is a novel on a struggle of a caregiver mother to cope with the family challenge.

Smita a homemaker for her family and is also a home maker for SAA. The time she gives for SAA is no less than the time she gives for her home. Time wise and work wise, her involvement in SAA’s work is more than anybody else’s. Smita’s father was in civil engineering branch of defence services and was posted at various centres in the country. This gave Smita a wide perspective and exposure to various cultures and could learn different languages. After 22 years of her marriage, there were fewer responsibilities and so she started looking for opening with NGOs doing social service. and finally joined SAA in 2001 as a volunteer. Smita is a versatile volunteer apart taking leading part in SHG meetings of both shubharthis and shubhankars; she makes the most of her contacts to spread awareness programmes in schools, colleges, housing colonies, exhibitions etc. She is a useful resource person in the administration of SAA’s office.

Neeta Koparkar, Member

A commerce graduate, Neeta comes from a family of musicians. She is an expert in embroidery, drawing and yoga, she imparts these skills at SAA’s Rehabilitation Centre with full dedication. She has pleasing manners and has established a nice rapport with patients, staff and volunteers.
